A Video About One Particular Introvert

Susan Cain’s Ted Talk on The Power of Introverts

Welcome!

“Everyone shines, given the right lighting. For some, it’s a Broadway spotlight, for others, a lamplit desk.”  – Susan Cain

Or in the case of many modern, social introverts, it’s the glow of a computer keyboard. In her book, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking, Susan Cain makes reference to the fact that born-introverts are naturally attracted to social media because it allows people like us to subvert our social anxieties and express ourselves boldly from behind the safety of our laptops or smart phones.

As someone who literally hid behind her mom’s skirts as a child, spent entire classes without saying a word, was often talked over mid-sentence and accused (as if it were a bad thing!) of being a daydreamer by my many math teachers, I completely related to Cain’s perspective. The idea that I was drawn to the digital, social world as a direct result of my natural shyness was enlightening. Something clicked and it all made sense. Then I thought, I wonder how other introverts are fairing in a world that often rewards extroverted behavior?

So, whether you’re a born introvert trying to navigate a world growing louder by the minute, or an extrovert curious about how your introverted colleagues or employees can add value to your business, I’m starting this blog as a place to share stories, host discussions and hopefully encourage some fellow introverts to boldly take the stage and some extroverts to embrace the quiet.
